Most former faculty members-turned-administrators are like me. We know our disciplines and how to create a course and do research. None of which prepares us for administration. Over the 30 years as an administrator, I have seen the same look in the eyes of many new administrators straight from the faculty. The look says, “What did I just commit to? Can I change my mind?” While I understand the questions, I do not accept that we, one at a time, have to adjust to the transition alone. Many of us do not want to admit our doubts to the person who just put their trust in us and hired us. Women are particularly uncomfortable expressing their self-doubt, fearing they will not be up for the job.
I would have wanted someone like me who has experienced the transition and helped people she hired to transition. So if you are considering administration, let’s talk it through. I can help prepare you for a position and be with you through the start of your appointment for as long as you need.
I do not have a template to offer. Each of us has an individual journey and needs an individualized roadmap. Moving to administration is exciting and challenging; having someone with you on the way helps as you move into a new arena.
